Zubin Mehta is an Indian conductor of Western classical music. He is music director emeritus of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor emeritus of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Here he conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a perfomance released in 1970. The Year 1812, Solemn Overture, Op. 49, popularly known as the 1812 Overture, is a concert overture in E flat major written in 1880 by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tschaikovsky. The piece commemorates Russia's successful defense against the French invasion of the nation in 1812. The fifteen-minute overture is best known for its climactic volley of cannon fire, ringing chimes, and a brass fanfare finale. It has also become a common accompaniment to fireworks displays on the United States' Independence Day. Romeo and Juliet, TH 42, ČW 39, is an orchestral work, also by Tchaikovsky. It is styled an Overture-Fantasy, and is based on Shakespeare's play of the same name. Like other composers such as Berlioz and Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky was deeply inspired by Shakespeare and wrote works based on The Tempest and Hamlet as well. This record and its gatefold sleeve are in Very Good Plus condition.
