Seiji Ozawa was a Japanese conductor known internationally for his work as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and especially the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he served from 1973 for 29 years. After conducting the Vienna New Year's Concert in 2002, he was director of the Vienna State Opera until 2010. In Japan, he founded the Saito Kinen Orchestra in 1984, their festival in 1992, and the Tokyo Opera Nomori in 2005. Here he conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a performance from 1970. The Concerto For Orchestra, Sz. 116, BB 123, is a five-movement orchestral work composed by Bela Bartok in 1943. It is one of his best-known, most popular, and most accessible works. Bartók said that he called the piece a concerto rather than a symphony because of the way each section of instruments is treated in a soloistic and virtuosic way. Dances Of Galánta is a 1933 orchestral work by Zoltan Kodaly. The piece was composed on commission for the 80th anniversary of the Budapest Philharmonic Society. It is based on folk music of Galanta (now part of Slovakia), where Kodály lived for several years. This record and its sleeve are in Very Good Plus condition. It comes with an original record company insert.
